By admin | Filed in SBS 2008

Migrating from SBS is not always the best thing you would expect to be doing, specially when it involves 2000 to 2008 which is not supported and you need to do a swing migration to 2003.

Here is a few steps that will allow you to migrate to SBS 2008 without the need to go to 2003.

1st and most important Step!

- Backup and Backup.

Follow the Steps located Here.

As a precaution, export all your Mailboxes to PST. I have not done it personally as I knew it would work.

The steps below will help you migrate Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2007 on SBS without any problems.

On your destination Server, perform the following steps:

1. Step Exchange 2000 to Native Mode

2. Select the Display Routing Groups Under Your Exchange 2000 Properties

3. Raise Domain Functional Level to Windows Server 2003

4. Run the Microsoft Exchange Server Best Pratices Analyser Tool

5. Run this Setup.com /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions

6. Setup.com /PrepareSchema

7. Setup.com /PrepareAD

8. Setup.com /PrepareDomain

9. Setup.com /PrepareAllDomain

10. Install Exchange 2007 (run as Administrator)

11. Select Typical Installation

12. Select your Exchange 2000 as MailFlow Settings

13. Let the Install Finish

14. Finalise the Deployment

15. Configure Public Folder Replication if any

16. Move your Firewall to point to the new server.

17. Moving Mailbox to the New Server.

If you go to Recipient Configuration -> Mailbox in Exchange Management Console you will notice all Mailbox are legacy. Select the mailbox and click Move. Select your new server, Global Catalog and Domain Controller. Sit back and Relax while the mailbox are moved over.

18. Redirect Inbound Mail to the server. Under Server Configuration -> Hub Transport -> Receive Connector -> Default Server -> Properties – Permission Group – Check Anonymous User

19. Check your Send Connector.

20. Delete Routing Group – Administrative Groups > First Administrative Group > Routing Groups > Connectors and right-click on the respective Routing Group Connector then select Delete in the context menu

21. Uninstall Exchange 2000 from your server in Add/Remove Programs.

22. That’s It!

This can be used also for moving from Exchange 2000 / 2003 to Exchange 2007.

Any Questions! Fire Up.

Thanks.
